All wood is distressed and antiqued after color and lettering are applied.  This sign has a routered natural wood border as shown in the detailed pics. 
 
These distressed signs will show signs of wear.  The woodgrain will be showing through in spots, paint might be darker in some areas than others. They are made to look older and rustic.
Stained signs will show less signs of wear due to the stain penetrating the wood more than paint
